Prayer’s Other Voice

Jesus is born. The prayerful shepherds listen to the angel voices and rush to see this one announced as Savior, Messiah, and Lord. They share the good news with all they meet, including Mary and Joseph. Others will share prayer endowed messages with Mary and Joseph. Listening in prayer often involves hearing God speak through other people.

In Matthew 3, King Herod listens to the voice of power and arranges his world around it, to his destruction. With fresh news from travelers, he plots against a child under two years of age. That is sad, yet common for those who confuse power with the true authority which flows from humble service.

Wisdom seekers listen to a different voice in prayer and travel to generously share blessings with a child’s young, holy family. As the magi depart, they foil Herod’s plot of violence, though many others feel pain as a result of Herod’s brokenness and the foolish system he served.

Mary and Joseph also listen to the Other voice in prayer and say “Yes.” They surrender their lives to God’s invitation to peace. The angel in a dream says, “Go to Egypt.” They go. The angel in a dream says, “Return to Israel.” They return. They raise Jesus to listen to the Other voice in prayer which requires discipline.

As we all face anxious concerns, in prayer we hear another voice. The life of prayer is not easy, but by listening we discern guidance and hope to move forward, faithfully. Prayer ushers us into the presence of angels and faithful friends. The simple life of prayer brings courage and joy in God’s presence.
